Perfect Weather for Table Mountain

Good day, March 2nd. Wow, a promising day. The weather is absolutely beautiful, so Ron and Chris opted that we should be doing Table Mountain today. Too bad for Gert-Jan. He’s still on his way back to the Netherlands, but such is life.

The Cable Car Experience

We made it to Table Mountain, and obviously so did everybody else because everybody else had been holding out for a beautiful sunny day. We had to park quite a ways from the station, although we kind of lucked out on that part. There was an option to buy a speedy ticket, and the guys decided that was a good way to go. That would save us about an hour waiting in line.

The scenery from where you enter for the cable car is already amazing. There are only two cable cars, they’re round and they hold about 50 people each. From there you’re overlooking Cape Town, and it’s just an astounding looking place. The gondolas actually rotate, so everybody gets to see the good view as you are going up. There are two lines with each having its gondola, so it’s about 100 people that can go up and down at any one time.

At the Summit

Of course the rest is a bit of a tourist trap once you get up there, but it’s worth every effort. There wasn’t that much wind, and it was a good place to have a little snack and take pictures. I ended up speaking with a South African lady who said she had walked to the top of Table Mountain from the other side when she was little. We also ran into a Dutch family, and I let them know I could understand what they were saying.

Journey to Vermont (Onrus)

After that, we ended up going towards the east. Ron and Chris had done some investigating and decided which way we were going to go. We ended up in a place called Vermont, also known as Onrus for the Onrus River. That in Afrikaans is translated to restless.

Staying at Oude Schuur

We ended up staying at a place called the Oude Schuur, which is Dutch for the old barn. The guys were able to reach the owner by phone, and he came back shortly. We were able to get two rooms sorted and went to have dinner at the Onrus River, a great place where you could keep an eye on the beach. It was a little cooler that day, but it all worked out. Thank you for coming along.
