Swakopmund Museum Discovery

Good day, February 20th. However, 2 days ago I omitted to share that there is a really neat museum in Swakopmund that explains some things that we may not have known before, as well as gives a lot of pictures or ideas on where all the minerals are. And with so much desert, there are lots of minerals in Namibia. And of course, a lot of it is protected country, as in national parks. But there is also plenty, especially in the north, uranium and other metals.

Beach Life and Fish & Chips

Another thing we had done is we got 2 times, 2 nights in a row we ended up getting fish and chips. It was a place on the beach in a cart that was doing very good fish and chips. Well, when we came back from Walfersbaij, Gert-Jan opted to go for a swim in the ocean. I did not, but he had a really good swim and I could take the pictures.

Journey to Sesriem

So being it today being the 20th of February, it is time to get moving again, and we want to go to Sesrim. And Sesrim is a little town close to Sossusvlei, and vlei I think means, uh, valley, which is somewhat of a highlight for a lot of people to visit. So today we’re just going to get to Sesriem and making that another beautiful day with lots of kilometers to drive, lots of rough road or semi-paved road actually also to begin with.

Just beautiful country, but it is desert and the moment you’re past the first little part there’s very few people that are traveling those roads. And then most of the time it’s other people with four-wheel drives and a tent on top that is being rented. A lot of people coming to Namibia, and so they should because it is a beautiful place to see.

Finding Accommodation in the Desert

Now we ended up at a place in Sesriem. One of the things there is that there’s very few places to stay, and what there is to stay is very expensive. We’re talking 5,000 Namibian dollars a night, which, yeah, once you spend the money, that’s gone, and you could have stayed someplace else 3 or 4 nights. But with the help of Gertjan’s wife, Ninke, we found a place like a quiver desert camp or something like that for about 2,500, which is still plenty.

Life in the Middle of the Desert

And then there’s no, no restaurant on the place. It’s not that far away, but you have your own little cabin, newer. It’s really not very old. It’s about 20 of them together. And then there is a bar, an outside bar, and a swimming pool. But you’re in the middle of the desert. I mean, really in the middle of the desert. You’ll see the pictures of it.

Very unusual, but doable for a day or two. I wouldn’t want to live here all day, all every day. At times the wind can be so strong the bar person said that it’s so strong you cannot even walk into it. But most of the time it’s very doable.

Starry Desert Nights

And what you do see is at night, a very starry, starry, starry night. Just a clear sky and so many stars, no way to count them all. So just for that, for some people would be they would go, come here, just for that.

So we opted for some car food this evening. I still have some dehydrated food that at some point I need to get to. I had a lot of backup options when it comes to camping and what have you, which I have not been using as much, opting for the African way buying things and meeting people rather than talking to the trees. Eh, they don’t talk back. Thank you for coming along.
