International Potluck Tuesday at Hope’s Inn

Today, April 28th, on a Tuesday, I found out yesterday that there was going to be an international potluck at Hope’s Inn — International Potluck Tuesdays, organized by whoever is staying at the inn. I got invited and felt pretty good about that.

Missed Connection with the North Carolina Group

However, I had also committed to meet with the North Carolina group at the Bella restaurant this evening. When the potluck came up yesterday, I decided I better go to the restaurant the night before in case the group was there as well. That didn’t work out since Monday the Bella restaurant is actually closed, which makes a lot of sense. I ended up visiting again just before meeting time and found there was no electricity and the group wasn’t there either. Communication has been minimal in some sense. I figured that meeting would just happen another night.

Potluck Dinner and the People

I made a nasi goreng variation for the potluck. We had a small group, but it’s always about the people that are there. We had Hana from Japan, who is here on an equivalent of the Peace Corps assignment for two years, teaching primary school. She is a very outgoing person and is from north of Tokyo.

Then we had Belinda and Marie, both studying at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands to become medical doctors, doing eight weeks of learning at Nakoma Mission Hospital. Marie is actually not Dutch — she is German — but she speaks Dutch as if it were her own language, which makes for interesting stories.

There was also a German lady who is here for a longer term, and one person from Malawi who is currently helping out at the Bella restaurant.

Sharing Is What Life Is All About

It was a good evening with exchange of information and just sharing stuff. That’s really what life is all about. If you share things, you know more, and so does the other person. Hopefully I’ll get to meet with the North Carolina group yet another time. But this place is pretty amazing and it keeps on giving. Thanks for coming along.
