A Quiet Sunday in Jeffrey’s Bay
Today was a Sunday in Jeffrey’s Bay, and as is typical here, a lot of things close on Sundays. They really observe the day of rest more than most places. It was a nice day for a walk into town, and I wanted to go back to the same restaurant I visited the night before because it was such a great place. When something is nice, why try something else, right?
Finding the Indian Restaurant
As it turned out, when I got to the restaurant I remembered it was only open on Sundays until 3 o’clock, so that wasn’t going to work. I went through town and found some other options, eventually ending up at an Indian restaurant. What was fascinating was that it was only in its second week of being open. In talking to the person running it, I learned he’s from India. His family is still back home, but he came here to open the restaurant. His plan is to spend some time getting things set up, find enough people to run the place, and then just go back and forth, stopping by once in a while. Whatever it takes, I suppose!
Meeting Michelle and Planning Ahead
While walking around and looking at my phone, a local woman named Michelle started chatting with me. She lives in the neighborhood and turned out to be a genuinely nice person. We exchanged phone numbers, and she already knew about my vehicle’s website and the journey I’m on.
I also figured out where I need to go tomorrow to arrange a car service. It’s been about 10,000 kilometers since Oshakati, and it’s important to keep up with vehicle maintenance. I’m planning to visit Car Service City, which has about 92 franchise locations throughout the country. They even have a relatively new place in Jeffrey’s Bay.
Recordings and the Hippie House
The rest of the day was spent making recordings and sending updates along. It takes time, but you need to keep it up as the journey goes on. The place where I’m staying is very nice — it used to be a hippie house. The owner wasn’t around, but someone else is taking care of things in the meantime.
Beach Access and the Indian Ocean
One great feature of the accommodation is direct access to the beach. You can’t see it from the house, but you go through a gate and over a dune, and there it is. I haven’t been inclined to swim yet — I’ve been sort of upside down in the Atlantic Ocean before — but today I did get my feet wet in the Indian Ocean, so at least I felt the water. Many houses around here have swimming pools, though they’re usually very small — just enough to get wet. That’s it for today. Thank you for coming along!
