November 2, 2025: Johan’s Last Day

Good day. Today is a big day because it is Johan’s last day. He made arrangements to fly out late at night with a flight to Paris, then on to Madrid, and finally take a train to Alcaceros to continue his plans. It was going to be interesting in itself. He ended up with a one-hour delay to start, but somehow it all worked out.

Meeting Christoph Roller

In the morning, Johan met with Christoph Roller, a German pastor in his 70s who spent six years in Nigeria. Although his health isn’t perfect, he’s still completing phase two of the Across Africa route. He has engagements in Accra and Abuja, Nigeria. Christoph is a very inspiring person, and it was amazing to hear about his work.

A Relaxed Afternoon

The rest of the day was mostly about Johan packing while I took it easy and caught up on work. There had been a heavy rain shower the night before, which served as a sort of natural car wash.

Discovering Sailor, the Hotel Pet

We also discovered that the hotel, which is completely walled in, had a pet named Sailor. Sailor is some kind of antelope and would eat out of your hand if you chose to feed it.

Goodbye at the Hotel

Johan took a taxi to the airport, which made more sense than me trying to drive and park there. We said our goodbyes at this hidden, hard-to-find hotel. It’s been an amazing ride having Johan along, staying in many incredible places.

Reflecting on the Trip

One of the most memorable stays was at Sunset Beach Hotel in The Gambia. Africa has offered everything you could expect: mostly single beds, an occasional double, sometimes no shower with buckets, rough roads, and unforgettable experiences. Johan has had a complete adventure, and it’s been a pleasure sharing it. Thank you for coming along, and we’ll catch you next time.
