Leaving the Hôpital Saint-Jean

Today, May 6th, it was time to leave the Hôpital Saint-Jean. The hospital kindly took care of the arrangements for my departure and organized a ride into town. They had offered to take me all the way to the airport, but since I wasn’t flying out today, a ride into Lilongwe was all I needed.

The Ride to Lilongwe

The driver was essentially a taxi driver who works for the hospital, making regular trips to Lilongwe for anyone who needs transportation. What was fun about this ride was that I could freely take pictures without having to stop. I considered filming continuously, but that felt intrusive and would have produced a lot of footage. We picked up an additional passenger along the way who also needed to get to town. The scenery in Malawi’s capital city is very busy, and of course, you still drive on the left side of the road.

Arriving at the Sunrise Motel

My destination was the Sunrise Motel — a place I had never been to before and hadn’t made a reservation at. I chose it based on its convenient location near the main intersection where the road heads north toward the airport. It turned out to be not far from another place I had stayed at previously. The motel had openings at a reasonable price, around $50 a night, so I booked a room for two nights.

Exploring the City

After settling in, I walked around town exploring the nearby area and checking out places where things were for sale. There was also a very busy KFC — there are a lot of KFCs in Malawi and across Africa in general. It was really nice to be able to make my way out of town in a relaxed manner.

Wrapping Up

Thank you for coming along on today’s journey. See you tomorrow!
