Morning at Sesriem and the Famous Solitaire Apple Pie
Good day, February 22nd. So we are in Sesriem, which is the Quiver Desert Lodge. What I omitted to share 2 days ago is when we— on the day that we got here, we had to come through a place called Solitaire. And Solitaire has very little. It does have a gas station and a restaurant and a few other buildings, but it is famous for their apple pie. So we obviously did have that, but it’s such a big event because you— to get there, there isn’t anything. There’s just a desert and you and the road, which might be corrugated but still very passable.
On the way there, we ran in— we passed by a motorcyclist, but we couldn’t see who it was. It turned out to be Dan, the person that we had met the day before, and he was struggling along on this sometimes sandy road. I would not want to take his place on a motorbike. Not a good thing.
Journey to Aus and Wild Animal Sightings
So then anyway, on this, on this morning, we enjoyed some more scenery from where we were staying and then ended up going to the Shell station to fuel up on pies. Huh, meat pies. They had the right things in the right place. So that was a great breakfast. On the way, we are now to Aus, and when I think of Aus, I think of Immergrader Aus, And immer geradeaus, of course, is German for just go, follow the road, go straight ahead. So today I’m actually making it to Aus. Feels really good.
Then on the way, we also ended up seeing some wild animals. There’s no reserve there, and like one of them was a jackal and ostrich, but they’re in the wild, not in a farm. So it’s been a very amazing, amazing journey. We made it to Aarhus going the long way. We omitted to go to another place where we could have seen a lot more, but the road would have taken us a lot longer because it was also a rough road.
Arrival in Aus and Meeting YouTuber Lost LeBlanc
We went to Aarhus in order to have a base for visiting Luderitz, and Luderitz is on the coast, so that’ll be coming up tomorrow. However, when we get to Aus, to the place where we actually had a reservation to stay— and there isn’t much in Aus, but they do have a great hotel— so on the balcony are two guys that are, uh, having their motorbikes parked down below, uh, which looked very interesting.
So we ended up with a conversation. It turned out that one of them, Christian, Chris, he, he has actually been doing videos and you can find them on YouTube. They are all under Lost LeBlanc, Lost LeBlanc. So there you find a resource with somebody’s opinion about many, many, more than 100 countries that he’s been to. So it was a very interesting conversation, and he’s joined by Cam, a friend, and they both now live in Indonesia on Bali.
This time they’re sponsored, they’re always sponsored, to do some motorbike riding in the south part of Africa. And they spent more than a month in Cape Town and now are riding Chinese motorbikes, which they were very happy about up to this point. And they, however, they weren’t going to stay where we were going to stay. They, they wanted to go to Lüderitz that evening still on their motorbikes. It’s pretty fast. And they were going to stay there for 2 nights, I think. So that made for an interesting encounter.
As I said, the hotel we were staying has been fabulous. Really, really good place. It’s like a haven in the desert. So that’s it for today. Thanks for coming along. See you tomorrow.
