October 30th – Leaving Kundara

Good day. Leaving Koundara again, a busy place. We didn’t really get any breakfast, but we ran into another person that made a lot more sense about changing money. So this time I changed $200 and ended up with a stack of paperwork, as in bills probably an inch and a half thick. That’s just how the money works here.

Road Conditions and Slow Travel

On the way, the roads kept being challenging. You have old tarmac roads that have holes in them, so you really can’t use them that much, or you have to go through deep holes. Quite often there’s a trail next to it and you’re sculpting your way over the road. It’s slow moving, and occasionally you cross a bridge with beautiful river sightings. The landscaping itself was really good.

People, Villages, and Animals

You really do find people in most places, walking along the road even when you don’t immediately see a village. People live off the main road on tracks and trails. And then you get goats—so many goats. That’s been a consistent picture in many parts of Africa. And then some cows, herds of cows. It remains a fascinating place.

Finding a Place to Sleep

When it was time to find a place to sleep, not wanting to drive in the dark anymore, we decided that camping was the way to go since there wasn’t any other place to stay. We found a spot slightly off the road, but it sloped down just a little bit. With the threat of rain in the sky, we chose not to pitch the tent because it would get wet.

First Time Car Camping

This was the first time we actually car camped, sleeping inside the car, and it was a first for Johan. It was a little tight, but we dealt with it the best we could and ended up sleeping enough anyway.

Closing Thoughts

It was a good day, even though we covered very few miles. Thanks for coming along.
