Good day — October 1, 2025
Today’s the day that we’re aiming for Algeciras. We never know if we’re going to make it, but that’s the goal. The main reason is that we discovered there are three or four different routes to cross the Mediterranean, and each route has several ferry companies. So there’s a fair bit of transportation going on. The actual sailing only takes about an hour to an hour and a half, but most of the time is spent waiting for the ferry and getting things sorted out.
Journey to Algeciras
We made our way to Algeciras in southern Spain, which is fascinating — beautiful landscaping, warm and toasty weather, and even some mountainous areas. We used a few toll roads since timing was important and we didn’t want to drive forever.
Hotel plans

Johan knows how to find reasonable hotels, and we ended up spending the night at Hotel Reina Cristina in Algeciras. It was a stately hotel, and being out of season, we got a very decent price that even included breakfast. Personally, I like staying somewhere I can park the car and walk into town, but this time the priority was being close to the harbor to handle any ferry logistics.
Preparing for the ferry
We got everything clarified for the next morning and enjoyed our stay in this pretty fancy place. Having the hotel close to the harbor gave us peace of mind, allowing enough time to manage any unexpected issues that might come up.
Reflections on the first day
The first day of traveling together went very well. It’s nice to see everything working smoothly, and it set a good tone for the days ahead.
Looking ahead
Thanks for coming along on this journey. Tomorrow, we aim to make it to Africa — the really interesting part of the trip. Hope you stay along for the ride!
